400 years of enduring friendship between the US and the Netherlands

This year, 2009, we celebrate 400 years of enduring friendship between the Netherlands and the United States.

Four hundred years ago, in 1609, a Dutch ship from the V.O.C. (de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie), “de Halve Maen”, arrived at the shores of what is now New York City, under the command of Captain Henry Hudson.
This lead to the establishment of Nieuw Amsterdam and the colony of Nieuw Nederland.
Some 167 years later, in 1776, the Dutch were the first to salute the flag of the United States of America!
Today, NY400 celebrates the spirit of freedom, openness, entrepreneurship and tolerance of those Dutch-American pioneers, and their continued relevance today and beyond.

For this historic celebration, the Dutch Government has asked me to organize two major Flying Dutchman Championships in New York harbor,
at the feet of the Statue of Liberty!

International Flying Dutchman Class
400th Anniversary of New Amsterdam Championships

and

The 1609-2009
International Flying Dutchman Class
4th Centennial New Netherlands Championships

These two major Championships are a great and exciting way to commemorate and celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson's landing on the shores of Nieuw Amsterdam, as they combine a number of key elements:

1) Sailing and history
Sailing played a key role in the joint histories and the economic prosperities of Holland and America. Sailing enabled the discovery of America, the founding of Nieuw Amsterdam, and the establishment of the colony of Nieuw Nederland.

2) Legend
The Legend of the "Flying Dutchman" is one of the most mesmerizing legends of the sea, and it will bring the mystique of the ancient square rigger sail ships to the Celebration of 400th Anniversary of Nieuw Amsterdam.

3) Olympic Sport
These FD Championships will not just bring "sailing" to the HH400 Celebration; they will bring the Olympic Sport of sailing. The Flying Dutchman has been an Olympic Class for almost 40 years and all FD Olympic Medalists are especially invited to participate.

4) Modern times and high-technology
The Netherlands is famous for its pioneering spirit, its thriving modern state, and its success in high-technology. All this is represented in the FD Class, which for over fifty years has been the fastest mono-hull racing dinghy in the world.

The Notice of Race for the two Championships will be published very shortly. Please make sure to reserve the dates of these spectacular races in your Agendas and Racing Schedules: September 8 through 13, 2009.

The Dutch Government offers free container shipping for 60 FDs from the World Championships in Medemblik to New York, and back to the Netherlands
(first come, first served, so make sure to register ASAP!!).

Subcampeones de Italia 2006. ITA-10.Final results y Crónica en italiano

Celebrado del 8 al 10 de septiembre en Forte dei Marmi con 39 FD's en la línea de salida y ocho pruebas disputadas, el Campeonato de Italia de FD 2006 ha finalizado con la victoria del ITA-45 Francesco Vespasiani / Francesco Gerunzi, séptimos clasificados en el reciente Europeo de Austria.

El Subcampeonato se lo llevó la tripulación del ITA-10 (Robero Cipriani y Stefano Morelli) que acabaron terceros en la clasificación general detrás del único extranjero del Campeonato: el GER-199 (Dirk Bogumil / Lisken).

Kieler Woche 2006Final Results

Segunda regata del circuito europeo puntuable para la Copa de Europa 2006 de Flying Dutchman.

Hay 32 FDs inscritos de siete países: Alemania, Holanda, Dinamarca, Hungría, Croacia, Australia y Nueva Zelanda, entre los que destacan los recientes Campeones del Mundo (Majthenyi y Domokos, HUN-70), los ganadores de once ediciones anteriores (Jorgen y Jacob Bojsen-Moeller, DEN-21) y nuestros amigos Frank Havik/Marc van der Pol (NED-6), Tin y Robin Matulja (CRO-51) y Dirk Bogumil (GER-199) que participaron en la EuroFlyingCup de Altea 2006 celebrada en febrero y clasificados en 5ª, 4ª y 7ª posición respectivamente.

Esta edición de la Kieler Woche contará con la participación de 5000 regatistas de numerosas clases olímpicas e internacionales y los Flying Dutchman correrán en el área Charlie junto a los 505. Un buen entrenamiento de cara al Europeo que se avecina.

Sábado, 17 de junio: Ninguna manga celebrada porque no hubo viento.
Domingo, 18 de Junio: Dos pruebas celebradas.
Lunes, 19 de Junio: Frustrating wind conditions on Kiel fjord. The Flying Dutchman sailed their third race, and the "old" favourite Jorgen Bojsen-Moller leads the fleet of 32 FDs (3 points), followed by Szabolcs Majthenyl, HUN in 2nd place (7 points) and Joerg Witte, GER in 3rd place (13 points).
Martes, 20 de Junio: Likewise the FDs and 505 competitors liked the fresh breeze and sailed 2 more races: Flying Dutchman: 1. Brothers J. Bojsen-Moller (this is their 12th win of the Kiel Week title!), 2. S. Majthenyl/D. Andras, HUN, 3. J. Witte/S. Maedicke, GER.

COME TO THE FIRST EVENT OF 2006 & ENJOY SAILING IN FEBRUARY

EuroFlyingCup Altea 2006Días 9, 10 y 11 de febrero.
Programadas siete pruebas: dos el jueves, tres el viernes y dos el sábado.
La inscripción son 100 € e incluye: hotel, desayunos, cenas, polo, etc. Precio especial para las féminas y tripulantes menores de 26 años.
The dates that we are planning are 9, 10 and 11 February with a seven races program (2 on Thursday, 3 on Friday and 2 on Saturday). 100 Euros entry fee but including for free: hotel, breakfast, dinners, polo shirts, etc. Special prizes for women and young crews (under 26).

Nuestro agradecimiento a Frank Havik (NED-6) quien, en la reunión de la Clase celebrada en el Mundial de Hungría, puso por las nubes la organización de la Euro Flying Cup 2005 de Altea. Y gracias por supuesto al Club Náutico de Altea porque mejor, imposible.
Our thanks to Frank Havik (NED-6), who in the meeting of the Class celebrated during the World Championship in Hungary raised to a really high level the Euro Flying Cup 2005 organization in Altea. And thanks, of course, for the nautic club in Altea because it would have been imposible to do it better.

Come vedete in foto, Leonardo sta muovendo i suoi primi passi sviluppando delle sue speciali tecniche per stare al trapezio. Lo stile e' buono.

 As we see in the photo, Leonardo is developing his first steps... in the trapeze. His special technique and his good style promises a great future.

Nada más terminar el Campeonato de España, dos tripulaciones españolas viajaron hasta el Lago di Garda para participar en el Trofeo Marina Preis, organizado por el Circolo Vela Torbole, que se ha celebrado los días 8, 9 y 10 de Julio.

ESP-6 (Ginés Romero/Roberto Sevila) y ESP-69 (Dolores Sánchez-Herrero/Juan Pablo de Diego) se clasificaron finalmente 4º y 12º respectivamente.

Palos de Carbono AvantGarde en Italia

A través de nuestro Secretario hemos podido saber que los palos AvantGarde con viento fuerte tienen muy buena respuesta; comparándolos con el mástil de aluminio la flexión lateral se reduce y la mayor del ITA-10 se adapta perfectamente. La botavara es muy fuerte y pesa 3,5 kg. Respecto al precio, aún no está decidido.

Parte de la flota española está considerando la posibilidad de asistir al "Marina Preis" en el Lago di Garda, del 8 al 10 de julio, Circolo Vela Torbole, y se están haciendo las gestiones oportunas para que Roberto Cipriani y Stefano Morelli compitan en el Campeonato de España que se celebrará del 30 de junio al 3 de julio en Altea.

Botavara Primeras noticias Crucetas
Roberto Cipriani y Stefano Morelli (ITA-10) están probando los palos de carbono desarrollados por AvantGarde en el Lago di Garda. Según sus comentarios, las primeras pruebas son positivas aunque han navegado sólo con poco viento. De momento es un modelo experimental que aún no está en producción; a priori podemos observar algunos detalles interesantes como el sistema de anclaje de la escota de la mayor en la botavara y los soportes de las crucetas y las propias crucetas de carbono, a diferencia de los Proctor que llevan soportes y crucetas tradicionales de acero y aluminio.


Los aussies y su palo de carbono CST

AUS 37En el Woollahra Sailing Club de Sidney se han realizado las primeras pruebas del nuevo mástil de carbono CST. Norman Rydge y Richard Scarr lo han arbolado por primera vez en su AUS-37 Wooooskar.

Las pruebas de test las han realizado compitiendo contra Fred/Cookie y David Ham/Michael Chapman y Douglas Parker que viajó a Sidney también. Con vientos que variaron entre 5 y 20 nudos tuvieron una buena gama de condiciones para poder probarlo suficientemente. Todos coinciden en que a pesar de ser la primera versión, el palo es veloz y "ceñidor".

Están convencidos de que con pequeñas modificaciones estarán en el mundial de Hungría con un palo australiano contruído por CST y con un casco también australiano (AUS-37) que ya ha demostrado ser muy competitivo.

Palos de carbono Proctor-Seldén

DEN 21 y HUN 70El equipo de pruebas (DEN-21 y HUN-70) durante el desarrollo del palo de carbono de Proctor-Seldén en Octubre de 2004.

En enero de 2005, después de probar seis versiones, el mástil pasó a producción comercial adquiriéndose las tres primeras unidades en España en el mes de Febrero (ESP-6, ESP-7 y ESP-10).
